Dear Community Partners and Friends,

Welcome to the Bethel Los Angeles Community Development Corporation (Bethel LA CDC) website. This website is one of the ways that we keep the community informed regarding our services and community activities. Our Tax ID# is 51-0429735.

Bethel LA CDC is a Public Benefit Charitable 501 (c) (3) California Non-Profit Corporation. The public purposes of this corporation are community development and revitalization, including but not limited to: developing and nurturing youth, providing assistance to senior citizens, supporting the family structure, fostering the creation of jobs and businesses and promoting computer literacy in the community of South Los Angeles with special emphasis on closing the digital divide, bridging the education gap between generations, and connecting life purposes with career choices.

We seek to empower the South Los Angeles Community by implementing comprehensive programs that coordinate economic, community, and human development.

Summary of Services

Bethel LA CDC (1) provides and promote community and economic development; (2) affordable housing for community residents; and (3) health and human services. Bethel LA CDC sponsors, develops and conducts a variety of programs that enhance and raise the economic, educational and social levels of community residents, leading toward a livable and vibrate community where human initiative, work, and stable families can flourish. The framework for operation is embodied in the following key areas:

Community Services and Economic Development

Bethel LA CDC’s goal is to revitalize the South Los Angeles neighborhood in accordance with the vision of Bethel for the block and the block for Bethel to improve community facilities, and promote opportunities through career and entrepreneurial training, community and business enterprise.

The “Home at Last” Program—this program is offered in partnership with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority to provide homeless people with permanent housing and stability with security deposits and rental assistance.

Business Centerthe business center facilitates access to business development resources that enhance growth and self-sufficiency, as well as provide information and seminars to retain, attract, and expand new and existing businesses. Assistance is provided to minority, women and disadvantaged business enterprises located within the South Los Angeles area.

Cease Fire Gang Intervention Program— Bethel LA CDC provides gang intervention services: grief support, school violence awareness, community intervention, mentoring, and counseling.

The Children Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools program—this program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.

Food and Clothes Program—Bethel LA CDC distributes food and clothes to those in need. These services are provided in collaboration with Bethel AME Church and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

School-To-Success Life and Career Guidance Program—this program is offered in partnership with the School-To-Success Foundation, Inc. The program focuses on life skills, and life and work planning for youth and adults. Participants are exposed to education and career exploration, goal setting, planning, and career development activities. Career guidance, mentoring, counseling, and coaching services are provided on an ongoing basis.  Students (youth and adults) are taught how to choose a college or trade school major and career for success in life and the workplace.

School-To-Success Technology for Seniors Program—this program is offered in partnership with the School-To-Success Foundation, Inc. The technology for seniors program introduces seniors to the exciting world of technology. Students are engaged in various discussions centered on familiarizing seniors with the various forms of technology used in today’s world such as cell phones, fax machines, computers,   e-mail, the Internet, digital cameras, etc. Focus: To close the digital divide.

Job Center—the job center provides job skills and training to individuals who are currently unemployed or under employed. Bethel LA CDC partners with other existing organizations and local businesses to develop programs to assist individuals to move to more livable wage earning job opportunities. Businesses are recruited and encouraged to hire these persons upon completion of training programs. Ongoing career fairs, seminars, and job information and placement services are available.

Financial Literacy Programthe financial literacy program provides financial education and access to free and low cost financial services for low-income working families. Bethel LA CDC provides ongoing classes and workshops for program participants. The program connects to local banking partners.

California State University (CSU) African American Initiative Community Outreach—the CSU African American Initiative Community Outreach is an education project designed to help African American students enroll in the UC system. Workshops, brochures, handouts, and other educational materials for parents and students are available throughout the year with an annual Super Sunday presentation and Super Saturday College Career Fair.
